These were despatched around theHorn as early as possible, and in the spring he startedback via the Isthmus. Arrived at Sacramento heagain began dealing in general merchandise, golddust and exchange. l.\ the autumn of I8>tl he haddisposed of his various cargoes of merchandise, andhad so enlarged the other branches of his businessthat they required all his MODEL DAIRY FARM,RESIDENCE OF T. W. DECKER,NORTH SALEM, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N. Y. NORTH SALEM. Thus began the bank of D. 0. Mills & Co., whichat once became, and to this day, under the same title,remains, the leading bank of Sacramento or the inte-rior of California. It is the oldest bank that hasalways maintained full credit in the State. Aftertwo years his cousin, Mr. Townscnd, retired, then taking the entire business and conductingit without a partner until L862. He had, however, abranch bank and agency at Columbia, which hisbrothers James and Edgar conducted, and in whichthey were partners with him. He was continuously and largely successful, andbecame known as the leading banker of the State,and. as the saying went, the luckiest.
