Library Street Affordable Housing, London, United Kingdom. Architect: Metaphorm Architects, 2012. Curved multi-storey brick faca
Built for Southwark Council and London & Quadrant Housing Association, Metaphorm Architects' Library Street affordable housing project is part of the district government's plan to establish architectural quality benchmarks for a new generation of residential architecture, and won the New London Architecture Award for best housing development in 2012. By enclosing the urban site perimeter and sensitively linking new to existing listed buildings in the adjacent conservation area, Metaphorm Architects created a green square around a community garden. The resulting forty homes consist of family apartments with generous loggias, terraces, and wintergardens, and of four-bedroom town houses designed with first-floor piano nobile, high ceilings and full-width balconies. The living spaces, southerly orientated with storey-high windows, maximise sunlight. Panoramic views over London and a pergola for festivities can be enjoyed on the communal landscaped roof garden.
