If we learn the list of the principal ones, we then know thatpractically all other things, however familiar by some misleadingname, must be compounds of two or more of the Elements. How shall I learn the list of Elements ? It would be well to divide it into several sections. First ofall, it is important to know that Carbon forms compounds withmore Elements, and in more ways, than all the rest of theElements put together, so that Chemistry may be divided intotwo departments—Carbon and non-Carbon, or as they are called,organic (Carbon) and in
