Tarleton, Lancashire, UK 25th March, 2015. 265 Massey Ferguson tractor_Warm temperatures & drying soils enable farm workers, labourers and owners to plant spring fruit and vegetables using a lettuce planter which is planting up to 1200 seedlings per hour. These should should now thrive in the newly tilled soil. This area, largely rural land devoted to vegetable crops grown on the rich and fertile soil of Tarleton Moss, supplies many of the major supermarkets in the UK as well as independent retailers, wholesalers, food service, food manufacturing sectors.

Tarleton was an island in the Lancashire marshes. In 1557, the Duchy Court of Lancaster was told that villagers were often prevented from going to their parish church, located just two miles away in Croston, by 'the rising of the great waters and rivers.' When the marshes were drained, they left behind rich soil that supports the growth of fruit, vegetables and flowers in abundance. The soil is loam and moss overlying clay; wheat and potatoes are grown. There are 3,209 acres of arable land, 1,995 of permanent grass and 154 of woods and plantations. The village is a parish situated in the Lancashire mosslands north east of Southport, and to the south west of Preston, in North West England. The village is known for farming due to its rich soil quality. The River Douglas runs northwards to the east of the village, which is locally thought to be where the Vikings camped on the river banks of what is now Tarleton.
