The Liberation of Bergen-belsen Concentration Camp, April 1945 Two blindfolded German officers are led through British lines at Winsen after notifying the advancing British forces of the existence of infectious disease in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. Negotiations for a truce had been concluded, under which it was agreed that, in order to contain the disease, a 48 square kilometre area around the camp was to be evacuated and placed out of bounds to combatant units of both sides other than those engaged in relief work at the camp.
