. Appendix to the Journals of the Senate and Assembly of the ... session of the Legislature of the State of California . the young larva pro-ceeds to work its way to the inner portions of itshost, where it livessecure and waxes faton his substance. Bya strange instinct, however, it carefullyavoids the vital por-tions, and so the hostinsect lives in miseryuntil its parasite hasacquired its growth, when it dies. While some of themembers of this fam-ily are of small size, many of them arelarge, for parasitic in-sects. The Caliephi-lates messer Grav., ofwhich we give an ex-cellent colored illus-tration elsewhere, is a member of this family. This is a new speciesin the United States, introduced for work on the codling-moth, of whichit has been found a very effective parasite. The females of some species of this family are remarkable-lookinginsects, having an exaggerated ovipositor, which appears like a longtail. This, when folded, looks like one piece, but is really composedof three pieces: the ovipositor proper, and two guards, which form asheath. The ovipositor itself is composed of three parallel pieces, one.
