Hartland Quay rock strata, Devon, UK. These rocky formations are the remains of a mountain range. Sedimentary rocks were deposited here during the Carboniferous period, in layers of shales and mudstones. Devon was at the southern margin of the super-continent of Laurasia, which collided with Gondwana to the south during the Variscan Orogeny, from the Late Devonian to the Early Permian. The rocks at Hartland Quay were buckled and folded in this collision. The top surfaces were subsequently eroded, producing these formations.
