Quain's elements of anatomy . s directly continuous with that of the under surface of Reissnersmembrane, is evenly distributed ; whereas at the crest itself the epithelialcells are, in the adult, only found in the furrows : so that the tooth-likeprominences project between the rows of epithelium into the cochlearcanal. Immediately below the overhanging projections, the epitheliumagain forms a layer which lines the spiral groove, and is continuousexternally with the specialized cells, presently to be described as formingthe organ of Corti. The basilar membraue stretches, as before mentioned, straightbetween the osseous lamina and the spiral ligament, and separates thecanal of the coclilea from the scala tympani. It increases in breadth,at first rapidly but afterwards more gradually, fi^om the base to theapex of the cochlea, while the breadth of the osseous spiral laminadiminishes. Thus in the first turn of the cochlea, this membrane formsabout half of the breadth of the septum, meaning about mm. ; but Yi. 399.
