ALFRED CAPPER. PREFACE In my Preface I address myself mainly to the pro-fessional critic and reviewer and to the Anglo-Indianofficial, and I plead their kindly generosity. To thecritics I would say that I am an entertainer pure andsimple, with no habit of the pen whatever. I feel thatin their presence I am but as the dust of the earth(only, however, in reference to their own special lineof life). I am like an amateur sitting down toplay my first game of chess with Lasker or Black-burne or starting out to box with Carpentier or JackJohnson. Remember, what is sport to you is death tome ; you know the rules of the game—I dont ; so asyou are strong be merciful
