In the Danville district the removal of overburden fromcoal lying at depths of 20 to 30 feet below the surface hasbeen practiced for a longer time and more extensively thanit has in any other district in Illinois. Beginning in 1866with the primitive method of exposing the coal by removinga very shallow overburden by means of scrapers dragged byhorses the process developed slowly, horse scrapers being-replaced about 1900 by the drag-line steam-shovel. Later, standard shovels were substituted for the drag-line and theyin turn, were replaced by revolving steam-shovels in MINING PRACTICE 109 The methods of stripping now employed in the districtdiffer in the path which the shovel follows while digging, inthe manner in which the top soil is removed from the shaleoverlying the coal, and in the disposal of the spoil. In onemethod the shovel makes a continuous cut about 50 feet widein a circle around the area to be stripped and the coal exposed
