Blood sugar testing. Healthcare worker advising an elderly woman on her test results. The woman's finger was pricked to obtain a blood sample for the glucometer (lower centre) to measure her blood sugar levels. Diabetics have to perform this test regularly. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body does not produce sufficient quantities of the hormone insulin, causing sugars (such as glucose) to accumulate in the blood and urine. Monitoring of blood glucose levels allows diabetics to control the disease through diet or medication such as insulin injections.
