Descartes was re-named (previously La Haye) after the philosopher who was born in the town on March 31st his famous quote "I think therefore I am" is translated from the French, "Je pense donc je suis. He was the father of Cartesian thinking. The statue is the work of sculptor R. de Neuwerke and was erected in there being a replica in Tours.
