An image of Charleston Gardens , near Firle , East Sussex

A summer garden for playing and painting. This garden was the domain of the Bloomsbury set who lived both, in London and Charleston House near Firle. It was seen as an enchanted retreat from London. Vanessa Bell wrote in 1936 of this ambiance associated with the house and the gardens. " The house seems full of young people in very high spirits, laughing a great deal at their own jokes ....... lying in the garden which is simply a dithering blaze of flowers and butterflies and apples." The Bloomsbury set , included Clive Bell , Vanessa Bell and her sister , Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, , Lytton Strachey, Roger Fry , Maynard Keynes and Duncan Grant.
