On the morning of October 17, 1912, four other rows of beets were dug, pulled, and topped as rapidly as possible. The tops and beets. The beets were thrown into small open piles (fig. 2) according to a common practice among beet growers, and the tops from the four rov/s were laid in a single windrow. At intervals the beets and tops were weighed. The mean temperature during this experiment was 50° F. (See fig. 1.) This exporimenrt was repeated on the following day. The loss in weight of beets and tops together was per cent. The mean temperature during this ex|)erim(!nt was 62° F. (See fig. 1.)
