Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . d to longtrains, as some years ago the writer hadoccasion to investigate a trouble ofbrakes sticking on a locomotive tender inpassenger service. All the brake appa-ratus and brake gear under the tender wasmaintained in a practically perfect condi-tion, and while the brake valve manipu- into freight service, as it can be bolted tothe 10-in. freight reservoir, and itscharging time is one-half that of the H 2valve, or about one-third that of the K 2in uniform recharge or restricted releaseposition, and can be expected to producethe same undesirable effects in freightservice as the P 1 valve does. Triple valves should be applied to carsin accordance with the catalogue specifi-cations, regardless as to the type of valvethat is removed from the car; or, in otherwords, the triple valve applied to the carmust be in accord with the car equip-ment, regardless of the class of servicethe car happens to be in. If any car having a freight equipment isused in passenger service, it must be FEED VALVE. NEW YORK TYPE L BRAKE VALVE. may have been somewhat faulty, the tender brake was the only one to re-apply, and an investigation disclosed thefact that a P 2 triple valve was beingused with the 10-in. tender brake equip-ment. This was made possible by thetriple valve being mounted on a specialtype of bracket instead of the brake cyl-inder, and when in the shop the wrongtype of bracket was applied, and the P 2triple valve could charge the 12 x 33reservoir in one-half the time required bythe P 1 valve with the resulting over-charge during release accompanied by thestuck brake and overheated P 2 valve is also finding its way equipped with the proper sized freighttriple valve, which will insure a uniformcharge and recharge so far as the triplevalve is concerned, and in applying, it willreduce the pressure in the standardfreight auxiliary reservoir as fast as thepassenger
