Location of Brushholder RingsChanged to Avoid Grounds BY MAX PASSLER Armature Foreman Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad,Spokane, Wash. Some time ago our company experienced a great deaiof trouble with the grounding of the brushholder ringson 600-volt, , single-phase motors which were of theWestinghouse No. 132 and 133 types. In severe winterweather it was no uncommon thing to have four or fivelocomotives come into the shops in one day with thistrouble. The first of the accompanying illustrations shows theoriginal location of the brushholder rings. The ground-ing of these rings was due to the large accumulation. MOTOR FRAME SHOWING ORIGINAL LOCATION OF BRUSH HOLDERRINGS AND MOTOR FRAME IMPROVED BY REARRANGEMENTOF BRUSH HOLDER RINGS of carbon and copper dust from the commutator, and itwas found that this could be avoided by placing thebrushholder rings close against the field poles. To dothis the cable is led in at the same point, but at theback of the nearest brushholder it passes over next tothe field magnets, where it can pass around to the otherbrushholders without getting covered with dust fromthe commutator. The new arrangement is shown in thesecond illustration. This has done away with thegrounding troubles, and it can be seen that a largespace is left on the commutator end for inspection andcleaning, while in the original design this space wascrowded with the brushholder rings and leads. Thecost of the change has not amounted to more than $10per motor. The Interborough Rapid Transit Company, New York,N. Y., in filling vacancies made by employees who haveentered
