This Hanson Cab in the Shelburne Museum dates to c 1895. It is made of polychrome wood, iron, glass, patent leather, and rubber. This vehicle was named after the English architect Joseph A. Hansom, who patented the original design in 1834. The Hansom cab was the first “taxi cab” or carriage for hire in English cities and became known as the “gondola of London.” Later in the 19th century, it became popular in the United States. This one was built by Hinks & Johnson in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
