But notwithstanding the many difficulties which beset the infantproject, it made commendable progress, and at the close of the year,1865, a little more than eighteen months from its origin, eight schoolsfor the older, and seventeen homes and asylums for the youngerchildren had been engaged; and in the former there were in attend-ance, at that time, seven hundred and ninety-seven, and in the latterfive hundred and thirty-two pupils, making in all a total of onethousand three hundred and
