Unerupted teeth. Coloured light micrograph of two unerupted teeth in a human jawbone. The dental pulp (white, centre) contains the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth. The blood vessels carry nutrients to the tooth, while the nerves detect sensations, such as heat and pain. Surrounding this is the dentine (pink), which is the inner layer of the tooth. Dentine makes up the bulk of the tooth and carries sensations to the pulp. The pulp and dentine are surrounded by periodontal ligament (pink with white circles). This connects the tooth to the jawbone and holds it in place once it has erupted. Mag: x23 when 10cm wide.
