Thomas Rankin, his first American ancestor, emi-grated with his wife, Elener, and their three sons, John,William and James, from the North of Ireland in1760, and after trying the Laurel Ridge section for ashort time settled upon a tract of 331J^ acres calledTyburn in what is now Washington county. Pa., nearthe village of Linden, about midway between Finley-ville and Canonsburg. It was then in Augusta county,Va. The station called Mollenauer on the Wheelingbranch of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad is on the east-erly side of that tract, which before his death in 1814he divided into three farms about equal in size anddeeded them to his three sons, the westerly one to Wil-liam, the middle one to James, and the easterly one toJohn. The deeds are on record at Washington, Pa.,dated in 1807, 1812, and 1813, respectively. The easterly farm conveyed to John Rankin is nowowned by A. E. Mollenauer, and part of the farm.
