Was it some kind act on the part of a missionarydoctor, or a good deed of a Christian nurse or teacher,that inspired this Viceroy to defy the vengeance ofhis mistress in Peking, in order to protect her enemies?No one can tell, but the missionaries in the provinceof Kiangsu escaped, and the vengeance of the Empressnever fell on the man who in peril of his own life,securely guarded the hundreds of foreigners, men,women, and children, who had always enjoyed peacewithin his (i) Government School for Boys, Hwaianfu; (2) Happinessand Glory Mission School for Girls, Hwaianfu; (3) Pri-mary Mission School for Boys, Hsuchoufu. CAUSES OF THE REVOLUTION lOI Dowagers Return to Peking.—Crestfallen andbeaten, the wretched Dowager came back to her capi-tal to find that all had changed.
