Adult stem cell research. Researcher using cell screening equipment during work on adult stem cells. Stem cells are cells that differentiate to form the range of different tissues found in the human body. Adult stem cells are rarer and less potent than those found in embryos. Cell screening methods are used to enrich samples of adult stem cells to allow them to be studied. The graphs on the screen show the distribution of properties such as size over a entire population of cells. Stem cells are being studied as treatments for a wide range of disorders. The aim is to culture stem cells and inject them into patients to grow new blood cells, heart cells and brain cells. Photographed in France.
