(see Chapter XII. on pelvic inflammation, page 192), cicatricialstenosis of the uterine canal, and a tendency to sterility andabortion. As regards the last, Dr. Emmets tables (Principlesand Practice of Gynecology, 3rd edition, pages 447, 448) show-that following lacerations of the cervix per cent of his 164cases were sterile, and of the 47 who became pregnant, 51 percent aborted one or more times. These were in the preasepticdays and infection as a sequenceto injury was undoubtedly morefrequent than now. Endometritis is considered inChapter XI., page 165. Subinvolution.—This may be de-fined as a failure of the physio-logical hypertrophy of pregnancyto subside after labor. It is duenot only to laceration of the cervixbut to malposition of the uterusfrom weakening of the uterineligaments and too long a stay inbed, with general debility follow-ing confinement. After the early stages of subinvolution infec-tion plays a role in most cases and there is present an interstitialmetriti
