A trophy skull of the Dayak people, Borneo. Elaborately decorated skull, the entire skullcap profusely carved with ornamental reliefs, a stylised human(!) figure with a lavish headdress at top. The front teeth and lower jaw missing, the surfaces of the skull with fine patina and partially rubbed smooth by touch. Height 15 cm. The Dayak people are the indigenous population of the island of Borneo and comprise several hundred ethnic groups, some of which vary considerably in language, culture and lifestyle.
