C8th/C9th cross-slab at W entrance to Applecross Old Churchyard, Wester Ross, where Irish missionary St Maelrubha founded a monastery in AD673

C8th/C9th cross-slab at W entrance to Applecross Old Churchyard where Irish missionary St Maelrubha (Maree) founded a monastery in 673. The incised plain-ringed cross of Torridon sandstone is associated with the burial of Abbot Ruairidh MacCaoigen who returned to Bangor, Ireland, to escape Viking raids but his body was brought back to Applecross for burial in AD801. Considered to be the work of Pictish masons for the Irish (Scots) monks.
