Annie Cahour, French virologist. Cahour carrys out research into hepatitis C virus at the Molecular Virology Laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. Hepatitis C (non-A non-B hepatitis) is the least well-known hepatitis virus, and by 1994 the virus had yet to be seen under a microscope. Research is being conducted to understand its structure, mode of infection, and to develope a vaccine. Hepatitis C is the most common cause of hepatitis in patients who have had a blood transfusion. Like hepatitis B it causes influenza-like symptoms, before jaundice occurs and the liver is affected. It may be fatal.
