Smallpox virus, glass sculpture. This sculpture was designed by the British artist Luke Jerram in consultation with virologists and created in collaboration with glass blowers. It features a transparent outer layer, which represents the outer membrane of the virus, and an opaque inner section, which represents the protein nucleocapsid where DNA is stored. Smaller globular structures protruding from the outer layer represent surface proteins. The sculpture measures 25 centimetres across.
