Total ankle replacement surgery. Close-up of surgeons carrying out a total ankle replacement operation. Artificial implants are being added to replace parts of the existing joint. This operation is also known as a total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), and is used as an alternative to fusing the ankle joint. The affected parts of the joint are removed and replaced with implants. The operation is usually carried out in severe cases of arthritis of the ankle joint.
