Kougarok is located at the junction of the Kougarok and Kuzitirin Rivers, 15 miles northwest of Mount Bendeleben, Seward Peninsula. In 1900, at the beginning of gold mining on the interior of Seward Peninsula, a small settlement known as Checkers was reported.
