Two hands cupping the moon. Our moon is a dry orb whose surface is studded with craters and strewn with rocks and dust (called regolith). The moon has no atmosphere Moon image December 7 1992. The dark areas are lava rock filled impact basins. The colour is due to the ccd being sensitive to infrared wavelengths of light beyond human vision.
