Elizabeth Evans Hughes (1907-1981), insulin patient. Hughes was one of the first to be treated regularly with insulin, with injections started in 1922. She had been diagnosed with diabetes in 1919, and had been on a strictly controlled diet for three years, causing her to lose weight. The insulin injections enabled her to return to school and a normal life. Hughes married William T. Gossett in 1930, and was thereafter known as Elizabeth Evans Hughes Gossett. This photograph, which dates from circa 1930, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
