Illustration of a roller hockey player hitting the ball.

Roller Hockey is a non-contact ball game played on Quad roller skates between two teams, consisting of four floor players and one goalkeeper, that was invented in England in 1896. The object of the game is to score goals by passing, dribbling and shooting a hard, 7cm ball into the opposition’s goal using, what is best described as the ‘original’ two sided hooked field hockey stick. The sport is a fast paced and exciting spectacle that has significant tactical similarities to Basketball (screens, blocks and set plays) and is played on any smooth hard surface such as concrete, parquet or tiles, known as a ‘rink ‘, that is ideally between 20m x 40m and 15m x 30m in size. Although Roller Hockey is an English creation it is most popular in the Latin countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Argentina where it is played professionally by Clubs such as FC Barcelona, FC Porto and Hockey Club Liceo de La Coruña who can attract crowds in excess of 1,000 people to big matches.
