(Fig. 87.) — The common wood cattleguard consists of a number of board slats l\ X 5 X 8 nailedat about 4-in. centers to slant face wood blocks, one block ateach end between each slat, 10 slats with 18 blocks forming asection; three sections are generally , one at each side andone in the center of track, and placed each side of road crossingresting on 2 X 6 timbers supported on 8-in. diameter cedarposts vsith small brace straps at the bottom and ends; the resttimbers are arranged to come about level with base of rail, sothat the guard extends about 4 in. above the base of rail. Theguards and fence posts are usually whitewashed when placed. Whatever type or make the cattle guard may be it is essentialthat it be held down in the most rigid manner so that none ofits parts can become loose and engage a locomotive pilot, abrake beam, or some other part of a passing train. Thereshould be no pockets that will collect dust, leaves or moist
