I loveto canoe, never, ofcourse, energetically, down a quiet stream, letting the cool breezeplay about me, fanningme into a dull love to bask in thewarm sunshine, doingnothing, saying noth-ing, thinking nothing, content merely to there is thatother inevitable ele-ment of summer, thethunder-storm. Though despised bysome, taken as an an-noying necessity byothers, it dear to me. It isgreat fun to be caughtway off in the countryin a thunder-storm. I hie me with all speed to a tree, assome means of shelter, telling myself the while that this isthe very worst possible place to be in a thunder-storm ; feelthe exhilaration of the cool rain, and crouch there content-edly until the storm is over. And then, how lovely it is. after the rain ! How cool ! How refreshing ! I joyfullyrun home, strip off my drenched clothes, and take a de-lightful plunge in the pool. I, at least, can appreciate athunder-storm. Of course one can have these pleasures to a certain ex-tent in autumn, but not in the rich abundance which alonewill satisfy me. I scorn hunting, fishing, chestnutting, everything that autumn can offer. Give me a hot, sultryday, with a cool shower at the end, and then only do I feelthe real joy of living! Autumn? Faugh!
