A young man and his mum board the preserved Shropshire Union Fly Boat “Saturn” on the canal outside the Lion Salt Works at a vintage rally.
Boarding “Saturn” outside the Lion Salt Works on the Trent and Mersey canal Over the weekend of 10th and 11th of June 2017 the Lion Salt works alongside the Trent and Mersey canal at Marston near Northwich held their second annual Vintage transport event. A young man and his mum board the preserved Shropshire Union Fly Boat “Saturn” on the canal at the Lion Salt works. The boat is the last wooden fly boat that is in regular use on the canals. She is based at the Ellsmere Port Boat museum and over the summer visits a number of canal events to give people chance to come aboard and get some idea of what it would have been like to live and work “fly boats” in days past. The boat was pulled along the canal by teams of horses and latterly a powered motor boat, as she tends to be now, and for this outing she had been pulled to moor alongside the restored salt works by the motor boat “Buckden”.
