George Palade. Portrait of George Emil Palade (born 1912), Romanian-American cell biologist. Palade discovered a new method of separating cell components called 'cell fractionation' and studied them using the newly-invented electron microscope. He showed that mitochondria used enzymes (organic catalysts) to oxidise fats and sugars to produce energy. He also discovered ribosomes and showed that they were rich in ribonucleic acids (RNA) and so the site of protein manufacture. He showed that the proteins were carried through the cell in sacs (vacuoles) before being released outside the cell to do their work. Palade received the 1974 Nobel Prize for medicine.
