Engraving from 'Die Lehre von der Reibungselektricitat' (The Doctrine of Static Electricity, Vol 1, 1853) by the German physicist Peter Riess (1804-1883) showing apparatus used in experiments on the conductivity of electricity. Riess spent most of his life studying static electricity and invented a number of instruments to explore its properties.
