The crew of the Stavros S Niarchos, prepare the sails in Brixham, Devon ahead of the ship's next voyage to Alderney in The Channel Islands. The Tall Ships Youth Trust's training ship is the largest Brig in Europe. A new crew of 41 joined the ship yesterday and will pay £75 per day to experience sailing the ship. Captain Liam Keating said: "Anyone can sail on her as long as they're between 16 and 80 years old. We are here to introduce people to the sea". The ship spends the summer in UK waters and sails to the Canaries for the winter. "We try to sail her as much as possible - about 75% of the time - it's a smoother ride when she's under sail and we like to minimise the amount of diesel we use. When the engines are powering her about 50% of the crew will be sea-sick" The 60 metre, 493 ton vessel built in 2000 uses miles of rope and miles of wire to hoist up to 10,000 sq ft of canvas sails. When a large crew is on board all the sails can be hoisted when in low winds. "We often take young offenders on-board", added Liam, "It helps them to see a wider picture of the world and the re-offending rate is excellent compared to other land-based activities."
