This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Geoid shape of Earth, ERS satellite model. This model is derived from data collected by radar altimeters on the European Space Agency (ESA)'s European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites. The geoid is the surface of an ideal global ocean in the absence of tides and currents, shaped only by gravity. This image therefore shows the varying strength of the Earth's gravitational field across its surface. It was obtained using the exact altitude of the satellites above the surface of land and sea. Image published in 2002.
