He disliked work on the farm, and as an alternativeapplied himself to study, of which he became very fond. Havingpractically exhausted the resources of the country district schoolin his native town, he was for two terms, Nov. 14, 1864, to April,1865, a student at Oak Grove Seminary, a Friends boardingschool at Vassalboro, Me. On removing to Lynn, for about sixweeks, he was a student in the grammar school at Gravesend;then in June, 1866, he entered the Lynn high school, from whichhe graduated in May, 1869, and was awarded a book as a next month he passed the examination for admission to Har-vard College. Being without means to enter at that time, he se-cured a position as clerk, at Salem, Mass., in the law office ofJohn W. Porter,
