The glittering ornate golden dome above the Hôtel des Invalides, floodlit by night. This great baroque church houses Napoleon’s tomb. Paris, France.
The Dôme Church, completed in1708, was designed by the architect Jules Hardouin Mansart. In1676 he was asked by Louis XIV (The Sun King) to build the church among the existing buildings of the Invalides, a military hospital already built by the king to care for and house his wounded and homeless war veterans. The resulting Masterpiece is one of the finest examples of 17th century French baroque architecture. The crypt below the dome houses the mortal remains of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Emperors body was bought there from St Helena in 1840, 19 years after his death.
