Protective12th century stone defensive walls rise over Bad Wimpfen


Originally settled in pre-Roman times, Bad Wimpfen was fortified by the Staufer emperors, in particular Frederick Barbarosa, in the 12th century. Over time the original walls were reinforced and towers raised. The town played a role in the Thirty Years War. The Red Tower was originally lower and at one time it had a red pointed rook similar to the one in this image. That roof was destroyed in the Thity Years War
