The connection with the train pipe is madeby means of the union coupHng n. Any condensation is takencare of by the steam trap, and so water is prevented backing upinto the piping, where it could freeze and burst the pipes. Thepurpose of the train-pipe valve is to shut off the steam at thetrain pipe from all cars in the rear of that particular valve; itis not intended as a means of shutting off steam from its owncar, as it would also shut it off from all cars behind it. Thesteam is shut off from a certain car by using the steam valvesV, v, Fig. 10. When changing engines, the valve can also beoperated so as to shut in the steam already in the train. END TRAIN-PIPE VALVE. 34. On occasions when it has been found more convenientto put the train-pipe valve under the platform at the end of the. car, the design shown in Fig. 12 has been adopted. This valveis constructed on the same principle as the ordinary standard 28 CAR HEATING. §13 valve shown in Fig. 11, and is opened and closed by means ofthe cam arrangement therein used. It is fitted with a drip toprevent freezing. The drip hole, about ^ inch in diameter, isnot shown in the figure, as it is on the far side of the valvebody, as viewed in the figure. AUTOMATIC STEAM TRAP. 35. Purpose of Trap.—It is of the utmost importance ina steam-heating apparatus that suitable provision be made fordisposing of the condensed steam, so as to prevent the systemfrom freezing and giving trouble through bursting pipes. Forthis purpose an automatic steam trap, Fig. 13, to which isattached a sediment well and a gravity relief trap, is used Aviththis system. 36. Description.—The apparatus shown in Fig. 13 isplaced at a convenient point behind the car trucks and is con-nected with the drip from the heaters in the car. In the
