The CSS ironclad, Arkansas helped defeat the Union Navy in an unsuccessful attempt to take Vicksburg, Mississippi during the spring of 1862. A year later after a 47 day siege by Union troops under the command of Ulysses S. Grant Vicksburg surrendered on July 4th, 1863.
