To obviate these difficulties a heating box has beendeveloped which is a great time-saver and gives accu-rate results. It consists of a wooden box, open at oneend and heated by electric lamps which are connectedin two circuits, each controlled by a separate switch as March 31, 1917] ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL 603 shown in the diagram. The box is divided into twocompartments, the larger section contains the lamps, and the smaller is placed over the thermostat by fasten-ing the box to the side of the car. The two sectionsare separated by a strip of thin black cloth which shieldsthe thermostat from the glare of the lamps and at thesame time permits radiation of heat. In testing a thermostat the box is fastened in placeand a thermometer is inserted through a small holein the end of the smaller section of the box. The bulb Position of Thermostat. BOX HEATED BY ELECTRIC LAMPS AND USED FOR THECALIBRATION OF CAR THERMOSTATS of the thermometer should touch the mercury columnof the thermostat. The lamps in both circuits are thenturned on, and the box is heated until nearly the re-quired temperature is reached. The lamps are thenturned off and the temperature in the box is allowedto become constant. The set of lamps in the end ofthe box is then used to raise the temperature slowly tothe point at which the thermostat operates. The lampsat the end of the box are used for this purpose sincethey are more remote from the thermostat and will, therefore, raise the temperature more slowly. Resultsobtained by this method have checked within V2 deg. ofthe readings taken during normal heating of the car.
