Historic photo of the first ever powered, controlled and sustained heavier than air human flight – achieved by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina at on December 17 1903. Their machine, called the Wright Flyer, travelled 120 feet in 12 seconds - Orville Wright is at the controls, lying prone on the lower wing, while brother Wilbur is running alongside, having just released his hold on the forward upright of the right wing. The starting rail, the wing-rest, a coil box and other items needed for flight preparation are visible behind the machine. This famous photograph of the “first flight” was taken by John Daniels using Orville’s pre-positioned camera.
