On the 9th of August 1833Father Baraga dedicated there a chapelto St. Vincent de Paul.^ This bark-church stood on Lot i. Section 34, Township 42,North Range 16 West, or what is todayknown as the Indian Lake Mission. Thenthe land was part of the Indian domainand likely could have been had later fromthe Government for the asking, but it waspatented to Abner Sherman on August3, 1853 and since has come into posses-sion of August C. Miller who operatesthere an extensive farm. On the old mis-sion site he has platted a Summer Resortwhich the people make a favorite campingground. The surroundingsplainly indicate that the Indians at onetime cultivated a large area of thisground. The timber is now as large asanywhere in the neighboring forest butthere are quite a number of old appletrees still living which were undoubtedlyplanted by the Indians under the tutelageof their missionaries.
