Retired Maj. Scotty Smiley addresses an audience Sept. 19 as he tells the story of his platoon’s convoy in Mosul when personnel encountered a roadside bomber. In 2005, members of Scotty’s platoon were injured when the suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device.
