Volterra, Tuscany, Italy: depicted in lighter shades of blue, a sculpted female face with downcast eyes, gazing from a window in Piazza della Pescheria, showcases the work of the highly-skilled artisans of Rossi Alabastri. This is one of the workshops and galleries in the town carving, repairing and selling the alabaster, still dug in local quarries, that prompted Volterra’s original foundation as the ancient Etruscan city of Velathri. I created this artwork from a digital image I shot in Volterra in May 2007.
