It is abundant inSweden, Denmark, the Baltic, and Norway; it is a winter visitor to the Mediterranean, but residentin the Bliick Sea and the Caspian ; it is found inAsia in salt lakes, and as far as Japan. It breedsin burrows made by rabbits and foxes in sand-dunes(hence the name Iburow Duck by which it is some-times called), or it may make its own Insome sandy islands oil the coast of Jutland burrowsare made by the inhabitants, who protect the birds.
